Fiducial Markers

5min

The fiducial markers are a series of markers that can be used with the Ncam system to help with the recovery process.

Key Points

  1. The Fiducials can be printed to any size
  2. Fiducials are not always required
  3. If making your own, make sure they are printed onto a completely flat surface
  4. Only ever use one of each type of fiducial in a space. If the system see's the same pattern twice it will cause confusion

When to use them

With the updates in Ncam Reality 2023, it is not required to use the fiducials when operating in Marker mode.

When operating in natural mode, and saving and reloading an alignment, then it can be useful to still use the fiducials

How to use them

If using the fiducials they should be placed into the environment in a position where they can easily be seen by the camera bar.

They should be in a fixed position, and after the fiducial has been learnt by the system then it should not be moved.

Inside the Reality software preferences, enable the "Fiducial Tracking" core

With the system tracking, move the camera around your space and make sure that the camera bar can see the fiducial at some point during this movement.

In the 2D witness view, 5 white crosses will be displayed on the chart when it has been properly detected. These are also represented in the 3D tracking view

After the fiducials have been learnt the alignment can be saved as normal

After the fiducials have been learnt, and the alignment saved, we recommend turning OFF the fiducial tracking mode. It only needs to be activated when learning fiducials, any alignment that has fiducials learnt in it, will automatically turn it back on when needed when recovering

Sizes

As a general rule on sizing:

  • 2-4 meters from MK2 Camera bar to ceiling: A3
  • 4-6 meters from MK2 Camera bar to ceiling: A2
  • 6-10 meters from MK2 Camera bar to ceiling: A1

The fiducial anchor chart may need additional lighting depending on where it can be mounted in the volume and this should be taken into account.
